IAT-TOP Research Kickoff Meeting

The 20th China Cerebrovascular Disease Forum was held in Beijing on April 21–23, 2023, and three Chinese multicentre clinical randomised controlled studies (RCT studies) led by Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University were successfully launched. They cover a number of important areas, such as intracranial arterial stenosis, intracranial arteriovenous malformation, and acute ischaemic stroke.

The intra-arterial thrombolysis after successful thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion in the posterior circulation—a multi-centre clinical trial (IAT-TOP trial) was co-led by Prof. Jiao Liqun from Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University and Prof. Chen Wenhuo from Zhangzhou Hospital of Fujian Province, while Prof. Raul G. Nogueira and Prof. Adnan I. Qureshi from the USA participated in the study design. The trial was designed to focus on the new theories and methods of intra-arterial thrombolysis after successful recanalization of mechanical thrombolysis in posterior circulation stroke, focusing on the long-term neurological prognosis of the patients and discussing the key points and difficulties in academia and clinics, with the aim of writing a new chapter for the future development of mechanical thrombolysis in posterior circulation.

The study involved the involvement of 37 high-volume centers with high capacity and high quality, located throughout China.

The study's leaders, Prof. Jiao Liqun and Prof. Chen Wenhuo , respectively, gave a speech and sincerely thanked the participating centers for their support. Simultaneously, we anticipate collaborating closely to advance the effective implementation of exceptional clinical trials with distinct Chinese attributes and to formulate instructive protocols, thereby enabling Chinese scholars to regain prominence on the global platform for acute stroke treatment.

Meanwhile, Prof.Raul G. Nogueira and Prof.Adnan I. Qureshi expressed their gratitude for being part of the IAT-TOP trial. They fully recognized the trial's clinical significance and innovative approach. They expressed their desire to witness the successful trial completion and interest in future collaborations with the research team.

A new era in Chinese neurosurgical cerebrovascular disease research has begun with the opening of this RCT study by the national multi-center participation. It also heralds a new chapter in future scientific research and disciplinary construction areas, and it continues to make China's voice heard in the global neuro-intervention field.
