History
The Neurosurgical Ischemia Unit of Xuanwu Hospital established at the end of 2000. At that time, the diagnosis and treatment of ischemic cerebrovascular disease in China were in their infancy. Professor Ling Feng established the Ischemic Surgery Specialty Group based on her unique insights into the development of neurosurgery. As an emerging subspecialty, ischemic surgery focuses on treating traditional neurological diseases using neurosurgical techniques. Like the neurosurgery department of Xuanwu Hospital, the ischemia group has gone through an arduous establishment process for 20 years.
No.1 Origination 2001-2005
The initial ischemia team was double-headed by Professor Li Shenmao and Professor Li Meng, who were responsible for developing interventional and surgical treatments. The team included three young doctors, Miao Zhongrong, Zhu Fengshui, and Ji Xunming. With the concerted efforts of the team, the Ischemia Group has gradually developed various surgeries such as stenting of extracranial and intracranial arterial stenosis, carotid endarterectomy, intracranial and extracranial arterial bypass grafting, and emergency intra-arterial contact thrombolysis, most of which are among the earliest and most pioneering works in China.
No.2 Development 2005-2011
Upon its establishment, the ischemia group initially consisted of a small number of specialized beds, totaling six. Prof. Zhongrong Miao assumed leadership of the team, and Dr. Liqun Jiao and Dr.Yabing Wang joined the team. As of the end of 2011, the Ischaemia Group was officially enlarged to a specialty group with 20 beds, considered the main group of the neurosurgery department. In the following years, the Ischemia Group has been promoting surgical and interventional techniques related to ischemic diseases, and we have entered a period of rapid development since then.
No.3 Research 2012-2018
With the maturity of clinical technology, our team has been paying more and more attention to the concept of "science," putting aside personal technical preferences and scientifically choosing treatments. In 2012, Professor Zhongrong Miao transferred to Tiantan Hospital. At the same time, many new doctors joined the Ischemia Unit, including Dr. Chen Yanfei, Dr. Ma Yan, Dr. Gao Peng, and Dr. Yang Bin. With our team members' joint efforts, we have completed rigorously designed scientific studies. We believe that the future of neurosurgery lies in the coexistence of scientific thinking and rational development.
No.4 Flourishing 2019-Now
In 2019, the entire neurosurgery department moved to the China International Neuroscience Institute (CHINA-INI). The main body of the Ischemia Unit stayed in the old neurosurgery ward and expanded to 41 beds. The ischemic group's ward realignment aimed to reduce the physical distance from the neurology department and achieve closer cooperation with the radiology and neurology departments. The leadership team built on this foundation to create a new Cerebral Blood Flow Reconstruction Center, which integrates neurology and surgery. On this extraordinary platform, neurologists from different disciplines can work together on the same platform to accomplish clinical teaching and research-related work. Meanwhile, more excellent young doctors have joined our team. We believe that excellent clinician-scientists such as Dr. Lu Xia, Dr. Wang Tao, Dr. Xu Wenlong, Dr. Xu Ran, Dr. Xu Xin, Dr. Yann Lin, Dr. Feng Duyi, Dr. Li Long, Dr. Luo Jichang, and Dr. Liu Delin, etc., will work together with their predecessors to build up a better neurosurgical ischemia group.
Clinical work
The Ischemic Unit is an exceptional being. The Ischemia Unit is part of the Neurosurgery Department, but the diseases treated are ischemic cerebrovascular diseases in the Neurology Department. The quality and quantity of our team's clinical work are among the best in China. In 2001, we carried out only 40 surgeries or interventions for the entire year. In 2023, our team performed nearly 3,500 diagnostic procedures, 1,694 interventions, 541 open surgeries, and 1,205 imaging procedures, making it the most experienced team internationally.
Scientific Research
The Ischemic Surgery Group has always placed a strong emphasis on scientific research. Over the past 20 years, from the Five-Year Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology to the National Natural Science Foundation of China, from clinical research to mechanism and innovation research, we have always adhered to the management concept of "Clinical Scientific Research" and integrated scientific research into our clinical work. In 2021, we completed the 10-year CASSISS and CMOSS studies published in the journal JAMA. At the same time, we have taken the lead in completing many pre-market studies, received nearly ten million dollars of funding for vertical projects at all levels, and published over a hundred SCI articles. We look forward to more and better results in the near future!
Education
Currently, the Ischemia Unit is a PhD and Master's training site and a postdoctoral mobile station with several postgraduate supervisors, such as Prof. Jiao Liqun, Ma Yan, Wang Yabing, etc. Over the past 20 years, we have insisted on rigorous and standardized long-term training, including a 12-month training in neurological intervention and a 4-month training in CEA Single Technique. The team has trained more than 300 neurologists and 100 neurosurgeons. In 2021, as the director of the Neurological Intervention Specialist Committee of the Centre for Capacity Building and Continuing Education of the Chinese National Healthcare Commission, we organized a national training program for neurointerventionalists. In the future, we can train more and better neurologists.
